why does is screen switching between application

When I switch between different applications, sometimes a new screen opens preventing me from seeing the two side by side. For instance, I need to open Notes at the same time as Excel but for some reason Notes appears to open to it's own screen. I am on a MacBook pro OSCatalina 10.15. Does anyone know how to shut down this feature?

Use two Mac apps side by side in Split View - Apple Support

Not all apps support split screen, third party apps would be suspect.
