Can not sign in - "Verification failed.... An unknown error occured"

Tried to restart iPad couple of times. Tried to sign in over Bluetooth, connected to iPhone. Changed password. Tried numerous other things Google found.

Did not work. Does not even send a login code to my iPhone for two factor authentication.

I can, however, easily sign in in Safari on the very same iPad, with the very same username and password.
