Watching an iTunes movie in airplane mode

I have some flights coming up and wanted to watch downloaded movies on my iPad, but I see in the discussions that a lot of people have had problems watching movies without a wifi connection even though they had downloaded the movies to their device. Is that still the case, or has Apple fixed this problem?
