Separate display causes fingerprint reader issues

I have a new MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2019). The fingerprint reader works fine when I use the laptop, but whenever I use it with my office separate display it stops functioning. In order to use it I have to unplug the (Apple) USBC-to-HDMI/USBC/USB adapter, then use the fingerprint reader, then plug the adapter back in.

Please help.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. I understand there's an issue with Touch ID not working when connected to an external display and will do what I can to help.

Here are some suggestions:

Restart your Mac from the Apple () menu then Restart.
Reset the SMC: How to reset the SMC of your Mac
PRAM/NVRAM can hold some memory that can cause this. Try resetting it: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac
