whatsapp backup not enough iphone storage

Hello,

I have an Iphone XR 128GB, I'm trying to create a whatsapp backup of 32.99GB to my icloud where I currently have over 100GB of free space available, but I'm getting the following error "Not enough iphone storage, free up 39.38GB of storage space on your iphone to back up your charts"

This is confusing and frustrating, why do I need the free space on my phone when the backup is going straight to iCloud? even I free up the space required, I will still get the same error. Is there anything I can do please? Many thanks

iPhone XR

Hello giorgio1982,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with WhatsApp.

From the sounds of it, WhatsApp is still configured to the default backup location which is your device. This article states: How to save your chat history - WhatsApp

"Your WhatsApp chats are automatically backed up and saved daily to your phone's memory."

Please go through the settings and options in this help article: Can’t create or restore an iCloud backup -WhatsApp

If you need more help, please contact WhatsApp using their help options on Twitter or Facebook for assistance with their app. Links at the bottom right of their help articles. Thanks and have a wonderful day.
