Lost Administrator Access on Partitioned Mac Air

Greetings,

I stupidly messed with the settings on users in system preferences, which caused me to lose administrator access from my only account. Initially, I found solutions using rebooting into single user mode; HOWEVER, my macbook air is partitioned and automatically opens up in windows every time I restart it, rendering me unable to access the single user mode.

Therefore, I do not have admin access and nor do I have access to the single user mode currently. Please help.

Hey madhavsingh_ug21,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. If I understand your dilemma correctly, you lost admin access for your user account and you aren’t able to boot up in single user mode because your Mac is set to automatically boot into your Windows partition. I can see how this might hinder being able to manage your MacBook.

Are you able to change your startup selection with the instructions outlined here?

How to select a different startup disk

If you are, switch back to your macOS options for startup for now.

Once you have that set, you can use these steps to start your Mac in single-user mode: Start up your Mac in single-user mode

Good luck!
