Final cut pro using all memory

I've been using this computer with Final Cut Pro X since the summer with no issues, until today. Randomly while editing FCP froze up causing me to force quit it, this has happened before and after reopening it usually works again. Except this time it did the same thing, so I force quite reopened once again and it still froze. I cannot even click anything once FCP is open because it just freezes and does the rainbow spinning wheel. After a while of doing this I got the message of "your system has run out of application memory" and tells me FCP is using 69GBs of memory which it can't handle. I've never had this issue before and I used to use a 2013 iMac for 7 years using FCP with absolutely no issues like this, I can't even upgrade my ram because i have the 21.5" 2017 iMac. Can anyone help?

Delete your preferences, as Tom said.

To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting FCP X and click Delete Preferences.

Reopen your library.

Then try again.

First, always trash preferences after a crash or force quit. Second, can you give the complete system specs and versions for software and OS. What’s the system drive, and how much free space is on it? Where are the library and media stored?

For the iMac the specs are:

macOS Mojave Version 10.14.6

Processor: 3 GHz Intel Core i53 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 8 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

For final cut pro:

Version: 10.4.6

For the next two questions is the system drive my storage? if so- 484.24 GB available of 1 TB. Where would I find where the libray and media are stored?

Is this a Fusion drive?

Right-click on the library in FCP and select reveal in Finder. The default location is the Movies folder. The default location for the media is inside the library. You can assign this in the library properties in FCP inspector. You should consider moving your library and media off the system drive to a fast external drive depending on what media format and resolution you're working with, and whether you're working with optimized media.
