Install W10 1511and then run Windows Update, instead of using a different ISO to get to a higher version.

If an AASP Technician installed it, then it should be fine. Can you run a SMC and NVRAM reset and test?

There are known issues with third-party SSDs (and/or adapters), hence the question.

I had the same problem of mkellerman, using an early 2014 macbook air 13 inch. I bought this macbook without ssd and I used a 512gb ssd pulled from an early 2015 macbook air SSUBX type, faster than the original SSUAX one. I tried for over 1 year to install Windows 10 with boot camp assistant but I solved today after reading this thread doing smc + nvram reset and using Windows 10 iso version 1511. Now I can use Win 10 but I can't do windows upgrades, cause everytime I try to install updates Win 10 freezes and I have to turn off the mac. By the way, is ctrl+alt+canc working on macbook too? How can I do windows updates? thank you for your help

I had W10 1511 on a 2013 rMBP, which was migrated to W10 1903 via Windows Update.

Do you really need anything beyond 1511, though? I had 1511 running for 3+ years on a 2013 rMBP, before it upgraded to 1903.

Unless you must have 1809, I recommend sticking to 1511, as long as you can. On my 2013 rMBP, the SysPrep for 1903 kept failing for almost 6+months, before it was successful.

The other option is to apply each KB manually, diagnose the failure and address them.

The name does not suggest that. You can also check About This Mac -> System Report.

The PRE_OOBE error seems to be a SysPrep-related error. I recall there being issues with specific KBs, which were further updated. In Windows Update history, does it show you which KB failed?
