The ‘home button’ works when screen is locked but not once you unlock the phone. How do you fix this? Tried restarting and shutting down. Currently using assistive touch, but would like to correct the issue.

Something could have gone wrong during the latest update, and I would suggest to install a fresh copy of iOS.
The procedure is: create a full backup of your device, then restore it to factory settings and, in the end, set it up as new, following these instructions:--> Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
When done, test your device. If it's okay, restore your data from the previously made backup.

I am aware it’s not a home button per say but rather the bar at the bottom of the screen that allows you to close out of apps and switch between apps. Same feature used to unlock your phone. Mine stopped working.
Why should you use or simulate a home button on an iphone model 11?
Where and how are you trying to use it, I mean, doing what?
