LG USB-C 4K display no 60Hz

Recently I bought a new display (LG 32UD89-W 32").

I also have a late 2016 MacBook Pro 15" running Mac OS Catalina 10.15.2

At first I was able to connect it via USB-C to USB-C cable directly to my MacBook-Pro and it worked fine at a resolution of 3840-2160 at 60Hz.

After two days the resolution in the display dropped and I couldn't get it back to the original. The MacBook only recognized it as a low resolution display. When I reversed the cable (as a last attempt) it weirdly went back to 4k resolution but I can't get it to show it at 60Hz since. I've tried resetting the NVRAM, downloading SwitchResX, different USB-C cables but I just can not get it to work as I want to.

Now, I've read a bunch of articles online and read about how some people started using a USB-C to displayport cable. I havent tried this yet but I rather not since this doesn't support charging the laptop at the same time. Besides I have another 4k display (LG 27UD88) and this one works perfectly showing 4k 60Hz with just one USB-C to USB-C cable....?

Hope someone can help me out on this one

Thanks!

Hello Bolke98,

Thanks for posting your question. I understand you're having some issues using an external display with your Mac.

For clarification, these resources cover the video output options for your Mac, and provide some great information about the adapters that would work for this:

Adapters for the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) or USB-C port on your Mac or iPad Pro

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016) - Technical Specifications

"Video Support

Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at millions of colors and:

  • Up to two displays with 5120-by-2880 resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors
  • Up to four displays with 4096-by-2304 resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors

Thunderbolt 3 digital video output

  • Native DisplayPort output over USB‑C
  • VGA, HDMI, and Thunderbolt 2 output supported using adapters (sold separately)"

Based on the above, if you have the USB-C to DisplayPort cable you mentioned, that would be worth testing. Depending on how that goes, this may help as well: Get help with video issues on external displays connected to your Mac

Take care.
