Siri not reading my text messages aloud.

I have an iPhone 11Pro am on iOS 13.3 and when I press and hold on a text message to have Siri read it aloud to me, up comes the box with the choices "Copy, Speak and More". I press speak and nothing happens. I have tried this on my wife's iPhone 11Pro and two of my friends iPhone 11's and the same thing happens, which is nothing. Anyway to get this most helpful feature back?

Thanks for any help out there,

Cheers,

Carlo

Vinoscopy,

I was able to have Siri read back my texts as expected using an iPhone 11 Pro running iOS 13.3.1. If you have updated to the latest version of iOS and this is still occurring, there is one more thing I would check before you contact Apple Support.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

One thing that pops out from your most recent reply is that this didn’t work with six of your coworkers. Are you iPhones provided by your employer? Are there any configuration profiles installed on the devices? "Configuration profiles define settings for using iPhone with corporate or school networks or accounts." An installed profile may prohibit certain features from being active on your device. "You can see the profiles you have installed in Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management."

Install or remove configuration profiles on iPhone

If you do have a profile installed, signs would point to this being at the root cause of the issue, and I would reach out to your IT department.

Thanks!

Hello, Vinoscopy.

I understand the Accessibility feature Spoken Content isn’t working within the Messages app. I often use Siri to read my incoming texts and am glad to have a chance to help.

I would first like to ask if this behavior continues after forcing the Messages app to close and then reopening it. If it does, I would suggest restarting your iPhone as the next troubleshooting step.

How to force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Restart your iPhone

If the issue is unresolved after performing these two steps, I would next ask you if Spoken Content works when being used in other apps on the iPhone. For instance, if you open a Safari tab, are you able to highlight text and then have it spoken back?

If you ask Siri to read back a text, will they? For instance, does "Hey, Siri. Read me back my last message." work?

Please take note of these answers as I would like to ask you to contact Apple Support if restarting the app and iPhone do not resolve the issue for you.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best.

Best Regards.

Hello Joseph, thank you for the response!

Unfortunately closing the app and restarting didn't solve it. I also shut down and restarted the phone, and that did not help the situation. However, when I do highlight text and then press speak, it does read me back the highlighted text, so that part works. Also, if I do ask Siri to read me back my last message, that works as well. But still no luck on selecting a text message and pressing the "speak" button, that still doesn't work. I also now have tried to do it on six of my co-workers iPhones running iOS 13.3, and it does not work on any of them. At this point do you suggest I contact Apple Support directing? Thanks again for taking the time to help me figure this out.

Sincerely,

Carlo

Hi A13_usr,

Thanks for reaching out to help! Yes, currently I am running iOS 13.3.1 and when I mentioned my failure at trying to get Siri to read back an individual text message after enacting a haptic force touch and choosing the "Speak" choice on my iPhone and several of my coworkers, my coworkers are all freelancers as is myself. So we don't have a specific employer, we are all self employed and all bought our own iPhones. So there is no corporate IT department setting up a corporate profile on our phones. Just so I can show where the problem happens specifically, it's after you haptic touch an individual text message and bring up the choice box and then press the "Speak" choice. When you pressed it in the previous iOS, Siri would read the message aloud. Currently when I press it, nothing happens at all.

Thoughts?

Thanks again everyone for helping out! I so appreciate it!
