iOS 16 upgrade siri not reading back outgoing imessage

Is this a feature or a bug? I appreciated hearing Siri automatically read back the text I created before sending- now all i get are "send it?" I don't want to READ what I just dictated - I want to know if Siri understood what I said before the message is sent.

I've read all the previous possible fixes for this vis a vis other iOS versions but cannot find an answer for this iOS 16.1.2

TIA

I learned that after I dictate a text and siri says “send it?” I can also say “read it. And then she will read it and ask about sending. I have to hear it first bc she gets it wrong a lot.

Also, she just stopped reading me my notifications (I have very few set) when my ear bud is in. I like for her to start speaking the text that came in when my phone is locked endear bud is in. This stopped bc of a default setting when I reset my phone. I had to go to “accessibility” in the settings, then “spoken content”then “turn on speech selection.” Separate issue but I am not sure in which thread I mentioned the problem.

Had the same issue, very frustrating. But found a way to change it back to where Siri reads the text back and then ask you to send it or not.

Goto Setting, in the Search bar at the top of the screen.

Then type in Siri & Search , just like it is shown here.

Then goto “ Automatically Send Messages”.

If the toggle button is green, touch it and it should turn off and now will be gray colour.

That is what I did and tested it and it worked for me.

Good luck if you haven’t resolved this issue yet.

Hello GoldieOldie13,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help you get the most from Siri and sending messages.

From our understanding, you'd like to have Siri speak any dictated messages back to you prior to sending, is that right? If so, you can change the way you hear spoken responses in Settings > Siri & Search > Siri Responses > Prefer Spoken Responses. Within this screen, you can also disable what Siri hears on the screen as well, or disable transcription of speech on the screen. The article here goes over that in detail on different Apple products: Change Siri voice or language - Apple Support

If you'd like Siri to send your messages without confirmation, you can toggle the feature on and off here:

"You can set up Siri to automatically send a message after it has been read back to you. If you want to skip the confirmation step when sending messages, go to Settings  > Siri & Search > Automatically Send Messages."

This is mentioned in: Announce calls, messages, and more with Siri on iPhone - Apple Support

We hope this helps to resolve the issue by toggling the settings to what you prefer.

Cheers!

I have tried those suggestions and they have not produced the expected outcome. When I say "Hey Siri, text X" Siri says "what do you want to say"? I say what I want to say and Siri then says "Send it"? If I say "read it", Siri will read what I've dictated.

This problem is now intermittent - for some contacts (I've checked to see if they are favorites and there is no correlation) Siri will read back the outgoing text message. This did not happen in iOS 15.7 - what is going on here?

No I have not - I was encouraged to get to the "Genius Bar" which I will likely do *after* the Xmas holiday rush- do not want to compete with those overjoyed new "I" gift receivers :-)

I am not hopeful and this is completely perplexing - did not happen in iOS 15.X...I am tempted to believe it is a programming issue with all the new SIRI "features" but I'd be happy to be wrong.

good luck

I am also on 16.3.1 - the Genius Bar person did a hard reset and it appeared to fix the problem. We talked about what I would need to do if it did not work - factory reset after fully backing up. I thanked him and when I got back in my car, the issue returned.

Five days later I connected to my win 10 pro computer, and after backing up, I did the iTunes factory reset - what a pain....and no, when I reloaded what was backed up, the problem was still there. I tried changing voices, all the things you can or can't do with Siri and no resolution. You have my sympathies :-(
