Files on Demand Default Setting iCloud for Windows 10

Since June 2019, iCloud Drive for Windows has had the Files on Demand feature in Windows 10. Is there a way to toggle the default behavior of this setting; i.e. by default to have iCloud Drive on Windows download (or not download) files? OneDrive for Windows has an option to turn this on/off by default. I don't want iCloud Drive to download files on its own, I want it to only download files when I need them. Right now I have to right-click on a file each time and choose Free Up Space.

Hello rank.0731,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities! I understand that you're wanting to know if there is a way to prevent iCloud Drive from automatically downloading to your Windows PC using iCloud for Windows.

The only way to prevent files from automatically downloading would be to turn off iCloud Drive. Otherwise, what you're experiencing is expected:

Set up and use iCloud for Windows - Apple Support

"When you turn on iCloud Drive, iCloud for Windows creates an iCloud Drive folder in File Explorer. Any documents that you've stored in iCloud will automatically download to the iCloud Drive folder in File Explorer. Files that you create on your PC and save to this folder automatically appear on your other devices."

If you'd like to provide feedback to Apple about this feature, you can do so by visiting the following link:

Cheers!
