I have an ipad from a previous employer and cannot remember the login. I'm trying to reset, however it looks like this device is still active on the employer's account. Past attempts to communicate with the IT department have not been successful, so is there any way to erase/restore/reset the device without assistance from the previous owner?

If the Activation Lock is set, you cannot bypass this security measure without assistance and cooperation of the previous owner. Apple will not assist in defeating this anti-theft mechanism - and nobody here can help you.
