location of media files

i have sked this question over and over with the same response ...none.

i have an external h/d where i keep my files. when in itunes media player, the artist's music listed doesnt match the files in C:Music/itunes/media or on my external drive.

my question is... where are the media files kept (what path)?

Where exactly are music files stored? Apparently the conversion from the iTunes.app to the Music.app didn't go very smooth on my system. I ended up with two sets of music: User/Home/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Music and User/Home/Music/Music/Media/Music I reset the location in the Music.app which gave me User/Home/Music/Music/Media but I'm still unsure if the music files themselves are in the Media folder or in another nested Music folder. Adding to the confusion, in the Media folder there are three folders (Music, Automatically Add to Music, Downloads-Music) and a file, Music Library.musiclibrary. Any help as to what goes where would be much appreciated.

iTunes music file location Trying to understand the file structure for iTunes files, the music I've uploaded seems to be scattered everywhere in the /user/Music/iTunes folder. Some seem to be there under artist names, others under a folder called /user/Music.iTunes/iTunes Media/Music, also under artist names, then some seem to be under /user/Music.iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/Compilations. Anyone know the reasoning for this, seeming, convoluted structure? Is there any reason why I shouldn't relocate all of them under /user/Music/iTunes to keep everything in one place? The reason I'm asking is because I have other devices that cannot be connected to the computer (ex: car audio system), it would be a lot easier to copy things over if I can get them in a more logical organization.

Is it okay to have the "Music Library.musiclibrary" file on an external drive? ~ I had my "Music Library.musiclibrary" located at Home/Music/ -My music files are all stored on an external drive ---The Music app stopped being able to locate my music files (see screen shots). After hours of trial and error, calling Apple support (that took two hours with no resolution), I moved the "Music Library.musiclibrary" to the external drive, restarted Music (the app) holding the Option key and selected the "Music Library.musiclibrary" on my external drive. Now, the Music app has been able to find my music files. My questions: 1) Is it okay to have my "Music Library.musiclibrary" file residing on this external drive? 2) What is the ideal file structure for Music to function properly? (see screen shot for my current file structure)

They should be in either:

C:Music/itunes/media

C:Music/itunes/media/music
