i have an ipod classic 160 GB from late 2009. i want to transfer all the songs on it to my macbook running catalina 10.15.2 which has "music" instead of "itunes" or to an external flash drive. i understand i have to use a third-party program to do this. does anyone have any recommendations? i'd rather have a free program but i'm willing to pay for something that is easy & fast.

The recovery process is essentially the same, but you copy the add the recovered data into Music rather than iTunes. See also this note on accessing the hidden files on the device:

Due to the fact that Finder includes sync and device management tools for Apple devices it is difficult to browse to the file system of the device using a standard Finder window. Instead use Finder's Go > Go to Folder... menu option and enter /Volumes/ then browse to the device from there.

thanks but that uses itunes which i don't have anymore. it also seems very confusing.
