Trouble updating Numbers on my Mac

I cant find information on why my Mac wont recognize an update. I have a 2015 Mac with El Capitan and cant get it to update to Catalina or whichever one I need so I can update numbers. I cant access my files in numbers and its so aggravating! Help?
