Does the apple watch series 5 need calibration for accurate run distance

I just got my first Apple Watch (Nike +) and did my first run with it using the Nike Run Club app. The distance came up about 5% short (2.95 miles vs my typical 3.1, as measured through Garmin, Map My Run, and others). Does the watch need calibration? I ran with my phone as well. Can I calibrate while running with the Nike app?

This morning I did the calibration run on a track. I ran 12 laps (3 miles, or just shy of 3 miles if you consider 1609 = 1 mile), and the native activity app for my outdoor run showed only 2.75 miles. That is quite a large discrepancy and seems like an unusual results from what others have said about the GPS accuracy of the apple watch. The map of my run was also not great when overlaying the satellite view and seeing the track and the route. Will this correct itself on the next run? Do I have a lemon?

According to apple the watch learns your patterns of workouts as you go along and adjusts itself accordingly,so I would give it a few more runs and see if this improves things.
