How Can I Read iBooks on my Laptop?

On my Laptop, I can:
a) Listen to songs I purchased, with iTunes
b) Listen to podcasts I subscribe to, with iTunes
c) Listen to Audio Books I purchased, with iTunes
d) Watch Videos i purchased, with iTunes

WHY CAN"T I READ BOOKS I PURCHASED with iBooks, with iTunes?

Amazon's Kindle lets me read Kindle Books on my iPad, my iPhone, and my LAPTOP.
Shouldn't APPLE let me do the same?
Please, Apple, give me an iBook Reader for my laptop.

iMac 21, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

The free program Calibre http://calibre-ebook.com/ will open iBooks and allow you to read them on your Mac, it provides the added benefit of converting many eBook formats to ePub so that you can import them into iTunes and sync with your iPhone and iPad.

Use the connect/share button in Calibre to connect to iTunes which will allow you to:

- read books in your iTunes library

- import books from iTunes to your Calibre library for safe keeping

- export books to iTunes

- shop several (lots) of other book stores ( including many free) for books and then export them to iTunes

Calibre is not the prettiest program but it is the most effective way I have found to organize my 4,500 eBook library. I don't think we will ever see or really want most of those functions in iTunes so Calibre is a great way to maintain a library and "lend" books to iTunes for reading on IOS devices.

That is incorrect for any paid iBook, which is what people are asking about here.

The same goes for Adobe Digital Editions.

There is no way to read purchased iBooks on your laptop, the only exceptions are books from a few publishers that do not use DRM like O'Reilly and Take Control.

You might be right as I never buy DRM'd books.

Most people never buy anything other than DRM'd books, and these forums have many long threads for 18 months now in which they express their unhappiness at not being able to read those from the iBookstore on their Mac/PC. Instead they need to use the Kindle, Nook, Kobo, or Googlebooks apps.

Every purchase page in the iBookstore says right on it that an iOS device is required to read the book.

Adobe Digital Edition, dowloadand the rest is just pointing the open file to itues ebook section

If you are unable to provide the title of a book you purchased from the iBookstore where this works, one has to assume you are only able to read other kinds of books, which is fine, but not actually helpful to anyone in this discussion.
