Apple ID issues

My Macbook Air won't recognise my apple id password but will on my iPhone or when I log in but not when I try to update to the latest MacOS.

I have tried changing my password numerous times and it sends me verification codes but I have no use for them as I do not know where to type them, please help me I need this laptop COMPLETELY function as I need it for schooling purposes
