Why is Apple Maps SO slow...?

For years, on all my devices, Apple Maps has been painfully slow to load.

Google is relatively speedy.

In preparation for this post I opened Maps on my iMac, and checked my internet speed. I was able to go through the speed check routine twice, and still Maps didn't load. The result you see is typical of the speed I get.

Apple Maps is so slow it is almost unusable. Anybody else get the same?
