When I tried to reinstall macOS on my iMac the computer froze

iMac 21.5" 4K, macOS 10.15

This is an indication of either a corrupt version of Mac OS or a pending hardware failure. I would recommend restarting n the Recovery Partition (Command + R on startup) and open Disk Utility. Run First Aide several times on the internal drive and look for any errors. If any appear that confirms a failing or failed HD. However, my recommendation is to take the computer to your local AASP to be professionally diagnosed and repaired.
