If you want El Capitan go here, How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan – Apple Support
read Section 1 and then follow the instructions from Section 4 to Section 7.
Make a full back up of your mac before upgrading.
macOS Mojave is 10.14 by the way.
What’s the error message?
The only place I can think of where you can enter your serial number is on apple’s site where they can confirm which model you have and what service options are available to do.
But you then have to look up that model (or ask me!) to see what OS works on that Mac.
The highest the MacBook Pro (Late 2008) can go is OS X 10.11.6 (El Capitan)
Mojave is 10.13.
Thanks for confirming this. The problem I have is I go to update software to El Capitan but it errors for some reason. Is there anywhere I can put my serial number in to check it is compatible?
my model is below
