Although I have selected the appropriate layout below, pressing the < key produces an § and vice versa. Why? I've tried resetting the SMC of the Macbook Pro Retina mid 2014, Catalina 10.15

I'd actually like to use the "Svensk" layout, so when I chose it (not pictured above), the top left key produces < and the bottom left key produces §. It should be the other way around on a Svensk layout.
Installing Karabiner Elements made they Keyboard assistant appear and resolved this issue (when using the option to write config to default in the preferences), however uninstalling Karabiner Elements brought the problem back.
PS If you still have the keys exchanged when you have the right keyboard active (so that < is at top left and ' is at bottom left), it may mean that the external keyboard is not being recognized as the correct "type" (which is ISO and not ANSI). This page has some possible fixes:

Selecting a keyboard there does not do anything. You must select it it in the “flag” menu at the top right of your screen. Try that and let us know if you still have a problem.
It looks like using Karabiner may be the only fix.
Or if you don't care about §, a custom layout could be made which has both keys making < > so that the switch doesn't matter.
Funny thing, after updating today to Catalina 10.15.2, (and using Karabiner Elements) the internal keyboard started to work wrong (similarly to the problems with the external keyboard), so uninstalling Karabiner Elements made the internal work fine. I haven't tried with an external keyboard yet.
What do the top left and bottom left keys of your internal keyboard produce when the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen is set to svensksamisk pc?
It appears it was fixed, as the external keyboard now works properly without Karabiner Elements, and brought up the Keyboard assistant when plugging in.

When you have "svensk" in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen, does your internal keyboard behave correctly, as shown below?
But then the external one has the keys exchanged?

This problem only showed up recently, I have used this keyboard for many months.
I've tried changing in the flag menu on top of the screen. I've seen and tried everything on that link you posted, including resetting SMC, and
sudo open /System/Library/CoreServices/KeyboardSetupAssistant.app/Contents/MacOS/KeyboardSetupAssistant
produces
KeyboardSetupAssistant[5405:436045] No unknown keyboard connected - terminating.
That's correct, the internal keyboard behaves correctly as in the image but the external keyboard have the < and § keys switched.
