Font remove option greyed out in Font Book and also cannot remove from terminal

I am using Catalina 10.15.2 release on MacBook Pro and I need to remove 2 font file with extension (ttc) from the folder "/System/Library/Fonts/Supplemental". When I try to remove those 2 files, I got ".ttc: Operation not permitted" error message.

Thanks in advance for your helps.

i explained this earlier.

Replacing system fonts in Catalina, if that is really necessary, is more difficult than in earlier versions of MacOS, as the system files are now "read only". To remove fonts from there you probably need to start up the machine from another volume/partition.

It may not be the fonts, but the way that text has been input/encoded. I would want to check this.

To ask Apple to add this feature sometime in the future, you need to go to

In the meantime, there are two ways you can try to deactivate or remove the Unicode Myanmar system fonts:

1) Go back to MacOS Mojave, if your machine allows that.

2) Connect an external drive to your Mac and install another copy of MacOS on it. Boot your machine using the external drive, and the go into your main drive and remove the fonts you do not want.

Could you please post screen shots of the correct and incorrect display? For the incorrect display, type the sequence in TextEdit or Pages. It would also be helpful if you could indicate the key sequence you are using for this test. This is so I can duplicate your experience on my machine, which is the first step in trouble shooting. (I do not know the Myanmar language itself but am familiar with how this script works and the font problems that can arise).

I will get back on other points later in the day.

Thanks for your reply.

The problem details with new Myanmar fonts is cannot display Myanmar character correct format.  It was displayed as  မေသခင္သိေအာင္လုပ္ ဓမၼဘဏ္တိုက္

If you can read Myanmar language, you will not the display was not right.  That's the reason I need to go back to old font.

If I install old font, it goes to another font location as you described.  By installing 2 font files on same font name, it shows as Duplicate font issue.

As you may or may not aware, Myanmar font is under UniCode and previously, majority of Myanmar people are using the font system called "Zawgyi".  Since this is the transition time, we need to disable all other fonts while using single type of font.  Sounds crazy.

I just realised there's 2 more new fonts introduced in Catalina and those are even disable the option to Disable the Font.

Since Myanmar Font is going under Unicode recently, there may be lots of compatibility issues - not like other Language Fonts.

Is there any way to Disable the 2 new fonts Noto Sans Myanmar (and) Noto Serif Myanmar?

I am trying to find out what is causing on showing incorrect display.

Thanks again in advance for your efforts.

Kind regards,

Could you clarify? It sounds like you are trying to disable Unicode fonts so the Mac will display Zawgyi correctly. Is that your purpose?

Here is a screen shot of what I see:

That looks like zawgyi encoding to me. If that is correct, no Apple or Noto font would ever display it correctly, regardless of the MacOS version. You would need to switch to the zawgyi font. But I thought everyone was moving to Unicode now, over the next two years, not the other way around.

Thanks for your reply.

In order to switch to Zawgyi encoding, I still would need to turn off Noto encodings.

Since Noto fonts does not have Disable function (Greyed out), I would not know what was causing the issue.

I do not have this issue before upgrading to Catilina 10.15.2 release.

I do understand that everyone is moving to Unicode. Since this is the transition period, we do need to use both encoding (of course either one at one given time) until Unicode is completely takeover.

Thanks for your helps.

I am not talking about to replace the System Fonts now. The Language system fonts should be able to Disable now it was greyed out as below. This is not practical especially Myanmar Unicode are not mature enough yet.

If possible Other than English fonts should give the option to Download when the end-user is required to use as below.

Would you be able to release the hotfix to enable the Disable Option for Noto xx Myanmar fonts?
