Black bar across bottom of mail display

Yesterday, my email display started showing a black bar across the bottom, so the displayed list of emails is effectively shorter. No idea why this started happening. Only clue (maybe) is that I was using FaceTime before it started happening, but could just be a coincidence.

I’ve tried rebooting, but it doesn’t help. Another detail: the display is fine when I first open the mail app, then it shrinks up from the bottom pretty quickly, leaving a black space at the bottom.

I found the cause and was able to fix it.

You have one or more hidden drafts that are waiting to be dismissed. You should be able to see them by starting a reply and dismissing the draft. When you do you should see the other draft panels layered like safari tabs. Dismiss each one and the problem will resolve.

Well, my phone was having a new issue this morning. It was doing predictive text in Spanish instead of English. So I rebooted again. And...

Everything is fixed! When I started up the Mail app, it showed several open windows, similar to what you would see in Safari. I never saw that behavior before in Mail. I closed them all, and the remaining one fills all the space available.

I can now have more than one window open in Mail, like this:

1)

2)

So, the new window is down at the bottom where that mystery black band used to be.
