Google Search and YouTube not working properly with Safari

Is anyone besides myself having issues with Google web search and YouTube, which is also owned by Google, in that certain features have stopped working since, I'm guessing, Google did their last update maybe two months back if that’s when Google installed their ‘Google apps’ i.e. the icon of 9 little boxes next to the blue ‘Sign in’ button on the ‘Google Search’ home page as I never noticed that before then or I never had that box of 21 icons 'popping up' since before then every time my cursor goes in that direction, which is really annoying!

With Google Search, four functions no longer work. They are:

1) Google’s ‘Featured Snippets’ can no longer be accessed. They’re being displayed fine, but I can no longer click on them to access them as clicking has been disabled!

2) I can no longer access ‘cached’ web page content as clicking on the cached down arrow symbol has been disabled.

3) Image search now only displays the first 20 images. All other images are simply blank coloured boxes and even if I click on any of the first 20 images it no longer takes me to the webpage displaying the image, but simply refreshes the page. The same if I click on the blank image boxes.

4) Clicking on the camera icon in ‘Google Images’ has been disabled so reverse image search is no longer possible!

On YouTube I can no longer access/see the comments replies as that has been disabled too!

As I say all of these issues happened at once about two months or so back. They all seem to be Google issues not Apple Safari issues as nothing happened at my end between the day before when Google Search and YouTube functioned perfectly and the next day when I suddenly discovered these issues. However there’s no way to contact Google to let them know so they can fix them.

I want to hear from any other Safari users having the same issues. All I can find on Google is a couple of mentions of a couple of others using Google's Image Search saying it's only returning the first 20 images for them with all other images after the first 20 simply being blank coloured boxes as I describe in my issue no. 3 though there's a suggestion it might have something to do with the domain Google use to retrieve image requests and that it might also be a security issue? Why only the first 20? but that's it really and I can find no mention of the other 4 issues.

That version of Safari is out of date for use with today's Internet, which is why you may be having the problems you are having. You may have got use Chrome or upgrade your OS version if you want to use Safari.

Eric, in what way is Safari 9.1.3 out of date with today's internet? How about Chrome 65.0.3325.181? If it's out of date - well I've yet to come across even one website that doesn't work perfectly! So I don't think it's a question of whatever browser I'm using being out of date else I'd have similar issues in Chrome I'd think and I don't. So why would particular websites not function or render fine in Safari, but do in Chrome? That's the fundamental question, not whether one is out of date and one isn't as neither are current versions. Could it be, for example, that Chrome 'tolerates' sloppy or invalid webpage code better than Safari? and webpage coders can no longer be bothered to use 'by-the-book' code? Can that explain why one webpage will work fine in Safari, but another won't and Safari's philosophy is only pass 100% by-the-book code whereas Chrome is much more forgiving? If that's the case then it's the webpage coder's fault, not Safari's!

Getting back to the specific issues with Google though, here are the posts detailing the issue with 'Google Images' only returning the first 20 images in an image search:

There's no mention I can find of the other issues I'm having with Google Search and YouTube. Whether these other issues are tied to the issue of the Google Images issue I don't know, but it seems reasonable if I solve the issue with image search then the other issues will disappear given they all started together on the same day.

In regard to the Google Images issue, one of the posts says it could be a security or domain issue. if you thing about then if it were truly Safari being out of date then no images at all would be returned and that's not what's happening! The issue also has nothing to do with whether one is logged in to their Google account or not since I don't have a Google account! It's also not only affecting Safari, but Firefox and Internet Explorer as well. Chrome of course is not affected which seems suspect given Chrome is Google's own browser! Could this be sabotage on Google's part? Otherwise why isn't Chrome affected?

I really need someone using Safari 9.1.3 or earlier to test if the same issues also happen with them. Then I can eliminate there being a problem tied to my setup.

Try another browser as a test.

Firefox        10.9 or higher

Opera Browser        10.9 or higher

SeaMonkey      10.9 or higher8

Waterfox          10.8 or higher

You can also try Safari Technology Preview. Go to Safari/Preferences/Advanced and check Show Develop menu in menu bar. Go to the Develop menu and select Get Safari Technology Preview. Open from the Applications folder.

Eric, My understanding is 'Google phone Support' is only for issues with specific things like Android or G Suite. There is 'support.google.com', but I've already searched extensively there and couldn't find anything even vaguely related to my issues and I can't post a question as that requires either a Google account or a YouTube account which I really don't want as I understand they're almost impossible or extremely complex/involved to get rid of if you no longer want/need them.

You say to try another browser as a test. I don't have any of the ones you list installed. I do however have Google Chrome installed and there are no issues with Google Search and YouTube, but obviously Chrome is Google! so that's not a fair test!

Even if go to the trouble of installing another browser and like Chrome there are no issues with Google Search and YouTube, that won't explain why these are no longer working properly in Safari or at least Safari on my computer. Are you using Safari and if so do you have the same issues I describe? If not, why?

You say to also try 'Safari Technology Preview' I don't see it listed anywhere in the 'Develop' menu though. What's it supposed to do?

Eric, what you say about Google's changes (update) may have made Safari 'incompatible' seems to make sense, but surely would this not affect 'ALL' Safari users and not just me? As I ask do you get the same issues when using Google Search or YouTube assuming you use Safari? You also say it's happened with other websites, well I've certainly encountered websites that either don't function properly with Safari, particularly in regards to playing videos, or is this a 'Flash' issue?, or don't render properly, particularly with image intensive websites, but when I come across these websites that's when I have to use Chrome, which has no issues at all i.e. videos play just fine and all images load just fine, whereas in Safari I just get a black screen as the video won't start and /or blank image boxes as the images won't load no matter how many times I refresh the page.

Your 'Develop' menu seems to have a great many more options in it than mine is showing and 'Get Safari Technology Preview' is definitely not on mine. I'm guessing you're using a much later version of Safari? I'm using 9.1.3 (Build 9537.96.7.8)
