QuickTime Player won't convert

I'm running OS 10.11.6 (El Capitan) on both my desk computer (MacPro 2009) and my laptop (MacBook Pro 2012). QT player (v 10.4), on either machine, won't convert video taken with my wife's iPhone 11. What gives?

Hello, Ba-ab.

I understand that you are encountering a hiccup when importing and converting video from an iPhone 11 to your two Macs, a Mac Pro (2009), and a MacBook Pro (2012). I feel like this is a compatibility issue and would recommending updating both Mac to the latest version of macOS they’re capable of supporting. While the Mac Pro is up-to-date, the MacBook Pro should be able to run macOS Catalina without issue. There is also a later version of QuickTime, V10.5, which is included with macOS.

Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support

Your wife’s iPhone may be recording in HEVC (H.265) which macOS default apps prior to High Sierra cannot handle.

To convert the video to AVC (H.264) during USB transfer from the iPhone to the Mac, change this on the iPhone: Settings﹥Photos [and videos]﹥Transfer to Mac or PC﹥Automatic.

To make more compatible videos in the future, that do not need conversion, change this on the iPhone: Settings﹥Camera﹥Formats﹥Most Compatible.
