Garageband Multiple midi instruments played at once

Hi guys,

I've just a simple question: is it possibile to play with my midi keyboard and my friend's electronic drum simultaneously in garageband? Both devices are usb, and we would like to use a sets of sound (such synthesizer or a specific set of drum available in garageband library).

I've read that garageband allow to record multiple midi input on one track only, but, that's not the problem. I want to know if we can play, listening our instruments simultaneously. For instance, I select a certain synth, and my friends selects a certain sets of drums from the library. Will we be able to hear our sounds simultaneously?

Sorry for my English, I'm from Italy :)

Hello elleerre90,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities! I understand you want to know if you can play with your midi keyboard and electronic drum. I'm happy to assist you in any way possible.

If you have an interface that allows multiple input sources at one time, you should be able to create multiple tracks, and record to each simultaneously. Here are a few articles that may assist you:

Greetings, I agree with Keith Barkley. I have tried to record two MIDI keyboards at once and never got that to happen. Even just listening (monitoring) - I don't think it's possible. I'd like to learn more about this subject. For instance, would this be possible in Logic Pro X? MIDI channels is a complex subject. Good luck learning more and please let us know if you get any good answers.

I see what you're saying. From my perspective as a guitar player I once had trouble trying to control volume of a MIDI organ with a pedal. Of course in Garageband I was using an intermediary program called Garage Remote for some reason I can't remember. I also wanted to control transport functions on a line 6 device. There were software pages with excel type spreadsheets that were editable and different types of channels, like MMC and CC and I couldn't find any support so I went back to playing guitar. Read a book about MIDI and wound up more confused than when I started. If you know of a source of learning and understanding for the layman please let me know. I know, "the internet", but I mean specifically.

Thanks
