Video but no sound when using Chromecast

I just recently got a new iMac with Mojave installed. For years I have been using my very old iMac with High Sierra to cast a website using the desktop format with absolutely no problems, but with this new laptop the video still shows up on my television but no sound comes through.

Is there a setting I'm not finding somewhere or some other reason this process would change when using Mojave?

I have contacting Chromecast support and they couldn't figure it out either.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello tjacobson1985,

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to use your new Mac with your Chromecast and TV as you were able to with your old Mac, as you get video but no sound. To help with this, please make sure you're following the steps in this resource on using a Chromecast, like making sure you're using a Chrome browser and not casting your entire Mac screen, as it is noted that audio only works this way with a Windows computer:

Cast a Chrome tab on your TV - Computer - Chromecast Help

Next, you can figure out if unexpected behavior is related to a user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.

Cheers!

Thanks for replying, tjacobson1985, and that additional info, it really helps! To isolate this further, please help us by answering a few questions:

  1. Did you test in a new user account on your new Mac?
  2. Is this happening on all websites being cast, or just a specific website or specific content?
  3. Does a video at YouTube.com work as expected?

Have a great day and thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I've figured out that my problem was slightly different than I described. When I am on the old Mac with High Sierra, I can cast all websites via the tab option, but on the new Macbook air certain websites will not cast via the tab option and get stuck saying waiting to cast and then nothing comes through on the tv. This is when I switched to the option of casting the entire desktop, and had no sound. I now realize that you can not get audio on the television when casting from a Mac using the desktop option.

I have spent countless hours checking all my settings and preferences and I can find no differences. Not sure what to do to get it to work.
