Two kids with the same Apple ID and I need to separate them

I bought an iPad for my daughter and used my apple ID to set it up. Then the following year I bought an iPad for my son and I used my own apple ID again. Didn't know about the family sharing at this stage. Now both iPads have the same stuff on them as if one takes a photo or downloads an App it pops up on the other iPad. they keep deleting the others persons stuff and are killing each other over it. How do I change the ID on one of the iPads so they are no longer linked? Any help is appreciated but please make it simple for me. Thanks in advance

iPad, iOS 13

I suggest you get both of them their own Apple ID so all their data is separate from your data.

If 13 years old or older.

Apple ID - create a new

If under 13 years old, you will need to set up Family Sharing to create an ID.

Family Sharing and Apple ID for your child

Family Sharing - Set up

When changing to the new ID, there may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. See Winston Churchill's response in the below discussion. Also set up Family Sharing to keep access to your apps/purchases.
