2016 Macbook Pro Display Problem - black screen or alternating lines

My 2016 Macbook Pro with touch bar has been having issues for more than a year but recently it has gotten really bad.

At startup or wake, only the menu bar is shown and the rest of the screen stays black. After 10-15 minutes warm up, the rest of the screen will show, but there are lines below the top menu bar which I found this post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7834368. Then the screen has alternating lines where the odd lines show the screen content from before, and the even lines show the current screen content. If I wait 5 seconds, then the screen refreshes and show the current screen.

Apple Genius wants a mother board replacement out of pocket since the Macbook is out of warranty. Is this a Flexgate issue or am I SOL?

Anyone has suggestion on fixing this? This is quite disappointing given how expensive this was.

I bought a thunderbolt to HDMI external display adapter to try today and it displays to the external monitor just fine. Does that mean it's not the GPU?

That seems right to me, and would narrow it down to the screen or cable attachment.

This would be good information to share on your return trip to the Apple Store.

You can try running the Diagnostic/AHT  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
