Connecting airpods to macbook pro

I am trying to connect my new airpods to my macbook pro. The operating system is macOS Catalina 10.15.2. The airpods pop up as an option to connect in the bluetooth preferences but when I click connect it reads 'connection failed'. I have no problems connecting these airpods to my iphone or ipad. I've tried disconnecting bluetooth on nearby devices, resetting the airpods case and turning the bluetooth feature on and off on my computer but none of this has worked. Why are the airpods still not able to connect? Please assist!!

I have exactly the same issue. I made my iPhone and iCloud forget the device (Gen 2 AirPods) and all that my iMac can manage is connecting to the AirPods for a second and then playing a jittery skipping sound out of one bud and then disconnecting.

Same happens with my girlfriends AirPods on her MacBook pro.

Has anyone found a solution yet?

Adding my name to the list. Created a feedback ticket with Apple today to track. I have a growing list of issues with my Apple products since the pandemic started.

For me I've noticed all of my iCloud/Apple ID linked devices started having issues, I can no longer use my Apple watches for example because once they connect to iCloud their local storage fills up and the can't last a day on battery power. Apple support keeps deferring this 'known' issue to future updates, this latest update didn't fix the issue. No response to our multiple feedback tickets OR support cases. Sending the watches in doesn't resolve the issue.

My AirPods are just another item in the list. I have to unlink and relink the pods to the device I want to use them with frequently. I've tried many of the troubleshooting steps described in this thread. Some work for a day, then the issue returns.

Looking forward to a fix.
