Mac to Windows 10 over network

I have been trying to get my new Macbook to be able to see my Windows desktop over my network at home to be able to share files etc. I have done this between Windows machines pretty easily. I get the Mac to see the Windows machine but cannot get them to connect. No meaningful message or information to further troubleshoot. Although I have had many Apple devices over the years I am new to the MAC, love it so far. There has to be a simple way to do this that cannot seem to find. Thanks

MacBook

That would indicate that you were not able to mount the Windows' share to your Mac's Desktop.

Try the following from the Mac:

  1. Open a Finder window.
  2. From the Finder menu bar, choose Go > Connect to Server
  3. At the prompt, enter: smb://<the IP address of the PC>/<the file sharename>
  4. If you set up the share to use credential, enter them when prompted.
  5. A folder should appear on your Desktop.

Did the folder appear, or did you get an error message?

Ok, thanks. By default, Win10 has disabled SMB v1.0 and relies on either SMB 2.x or 3.x when establishing a file sharing connection between devices. Since you can ping the PC from the Mac, we know that this devices are on the same network, but we don't know (yet) which version of SMB is being used when you try making a connection for file sharing. Apple initially only supported SMB 1.x, but added SMB 2.x with OS X 10.7 (Lion) and SMB 3.x with OS X 10.10 (Yosemite). This would mean that you would need to be running Lion or later ... which, most likely, you are.

Are you running any type of beta of Windows 10. That is, is this PC on either the "Slow" or "Fast" Preview ring? Is it running the "Home" or "Pro" version?

With the Win10 file share mounted on your Mac's desktop, what is the output for the following command in the Terminal:

  • smbutil statshares -a

Without doing a data capture, with something like Wireshark between these two devices, we won't really know what the culprit is that is preventing the communication.

Just to clarify your goals. Are you trying to:

  1. Screen share between them so that you can access each device's desktop for remote viewing? That is, operate one of these devices as "headless?" This would rely on something like VNC.
  2. Transfer files between devices? This would rely on establishing a SMB connection between them. Just being able to ping is not an adequate test for this.
  3. Something else?

Now that you can establish a SMB connection, did the share mount on your Macs's Desktop? ... and would you still go ahead and post the result of the smbutil command for me?

Based on the issue with guest access, that appears to be a permissions setting that needs to be adjusted. How are you sharing the Windows 10 folder? Please post an image of the Windows file sharing settings.

I am close. Seems the old connection was trying as asp not smb. Now the connection goes through but it will not go through as guest. When I try with credentials it put my name in but the password on my windows machine does not seem to work,.

You have me almost there, thank you so much.

Yes,, I have sharing on that folder and included everyone.
