If I delete photos from my MacBook, will it delete them from iCloud?

Hello,

I have been using iPhone for years, but I just bought my first MacBook Air. It seems it downloaded all the photos from iCloud to my MacBook for some reason so now my MacBook is almost full. I don't want my iCloud photos on my MacBook, so I turned photos off in the iCloud sections of my MacBook, but the photos are still on the MacBook it seems. If I delete them from my MacBook, will it delete them from my iPhone/iCloud account?

Please help,

Thanks

MacBook

If you have iCloud Photos syncing turned off in System Preferences/iCloud (Apple ID for Catalina), then you should be able to delete the photos from your computer without deleting them from iCloud. You can also open Photos/Preferences/iCloud and turn syncing off there.
