Cannot login to mac - tried usual methods

Hi,

I cannot log into my new Macbook Pro. I did login when I first used it, but when I shut it down and turned it on again I could not log in.

  1. I tried resetting the password with my apple ID, but I when I try I get an error: 'Cannot Connect to Apple ID servers'.
  2. I tried restarting in recovery mode and going to utilities/terminal to reset the password there. But before it lets me enter the terminal window, it asks for my username and password, which it does not accept. So I cannot get in.

Any assistance with this would be much appreciated as I need the new mac for work!

thanks!

Greetings, and welcome to Apple Support Communities, SNEW11!

From my understanding, you’re unable to log in to your macOS user account due to the password being incorrect.  I definitely want to help you get back on track at work.

First, I’d recommend following all the steps listed here: Change or reset the password of a macOS user account - Apple Support

You mentioned that when trying to change the password using your Apple ID, you were given an error that it was unable to connect to Apple ID servers.  I’d recommend trying a different network connection to see if that helps.

If you’re still unable to change your password after completing the steps above, Contact Apple Support.

I hope that helps, and thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  Have a great day!
