MacBook Pro (Mid 2014) sleeps/shuts down moments after opening while on battery power.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) sleeps/shuts down moments after opening and signing in while on battery power. I open the notebook, log in, and begin a task (whether its opening an email, loading a webpage, or pulling up a Word document) and the MacBook display goes black without warning. It happens about two-thirds of the time, but it doesn't matter what percentage the battery shows -- it does it when the battery shows 70+% and when it shows 20%. I have to plug it in and wait a few minutes before it will do anything. Then, I have to hold down the power button for several seconds before it seemingly just wakes up and prompts me to log back in. When it starts back up the battery shows the same charge as it did right before it slept/shutdown. Usually, its just as I left it when it inexplicably slept/shut down, all the same apps and pages are open. I'm at a loss. Its extremely frustrating and means I can't rely on the computer to work without the charger. I've reset the SMC, PRAM, etc. Any ideas?

There usually are three parts that could affect your MacBook Pro; these could need replacement.

1] Battery. 2] MacSafe Adapter. -&/or- 3] DC-in Board.

The DC-in Board supplies power to both charge & power MB/Pro. This, separate from logic board.

Troubleshooting could resolve this though process of elimination, & reveal cause of symptom.

An authorized Apple service provider or apple genius could help discover/fix actual cause.

The DC-in Board and other two power related parts, often play a role in resolving this.

Hello, Ben Rowley!

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities!

I see from your post that your MacBook Pro, while on battery power, shuts down shortly after you log in. When you manage to get any apps to load on screen, the display will suddenly go black without reason, regardless of the battery percentage. The only way you have found to keep your Mac turned on to use is to keep it plugged in with its power adapter. You did a good job trouble to diagnose and troubleshoot the issue yourself by performing an SMC and PRAM reset. Let's see if we can find a lasting solution.

Take a look at this article called About Mac notebook batteries and follow the steps and recommendation provided to see if your battery or your Mac may require service.

I hope this helps!

Cheers.
