Hi,

It depends on which MacBook Air you are using.

If your MacBook Air has USB-C ports only, you need to get the external drive which has USB-C port or if the drive has USB-3.0, you need to get USB-C to USB adapter to connect the drive.

If your MacBook Air has USB2.0(3.0) and Thunderbolt ports, you can connect directly to external drive which has USB-3.0 or Thunderbolt port.
