Messages on Mac started having a gray circle next to my sent bubbles

Messages on Mac started having a gray circle next to my sent bubbles. This started today 01/23/20 and the same gray circle wth the letters "MD" inside, like an icon for a contact. BUT it is to the right of my sent bubbles, in current messages and also all others in my Messages box, when opened the circle with MD are next to mine on the right. On a MacBook Pro, Mojave 10.14.6. All messages are arriving to the recipient, just don't understand where the gray circle is coming from. Screen pic imported.

Messages > View> [√] Show buddy pictures in all conversations

Those messages are being marked with the initials of the sender.

It generally pulls those from "Contacts", provided there is a contact card directly associated that shows a picture. Otherwise, it will take a stab at initials, with varying success.

Thanks Grant! That worked beautifully. Perhaps I bumped it in settings at some point, but deselected and circles gone.

Still curious why "MD" if it is to show all buddies. I would be TG and I have a photo avatar. Oh well, just happy the circle is poof.
