I upgraded my 3G from 3.2.1 to 4.0.1 this afternoon and now can not connect to wifi, otherwise it seems ok. Hopefully Apple will fix this problem soon as my trouble does not seem unique:

I may as well throw my name in with the crowd of those who lost all wifi.
After I upgraded to OS4, the phone was significantly slowed, but no real problems with the wifi. Same thing with 4.0.1 at first (I upgraded pretty much as soon as it was available as I (incorretly) hoped that it would address the sluggish performance after the 4.0 upgrade). Last night, boom, no wifi networks show up. My wife has a 3GS and can see/connect no problem, so it's not the router. IMO, it's an overheating problem as some have mentioned because the phone "chugs" so much with the new OS, and it eventually screws the wifi.
Apple is going to go through a lot of phones if their OS is causing hardware issues. It seems like they gear their new OS's to their latest product, but don't do enough trail time on their older, but still VERY well used products. Eventually, OS5 will burn the 3GS, OS6 will burn the Iphone4, etc. I doubt that this is some kind of stratey to keep us buying phones, rather just poor testing of new software on previous products.
That's exactly what happened with me as well... The phone got uber sluggish after upgrade to ios4, but no problems with the wifi.
I upgraded to 4.0.1 hoping it would address the sluggish performance. Then one random day, wifi networks would no longer show up. My home network, office network, etc. These are networks that are "preferred". My phone has been automatically connecting to them for 2 years with no problem.
My computers still connect to all my wifi networks with no problem so it's definitely not a network issue (plus whats the chance of several geographically separate networks all breaking all at once?).
Same issue. I spent the entire afternoon trying to fix it before I decided to check if it could (heaven forbid) be a known issue that I could do something about.
I've decided that, yes, it is a known issue (to all but apple corp.) but no, there is nothing I can do about it.
I never thought I'd consider a Droid phone until the iPhone 4 and especially since this. I had thought that by the time I was eligible for phone upgrade, the iPhone 4 would have had the bugs shaken out and then I'd get one of them. Now I'm seriously considering the Droid for when my contract with ATT is up.
Sad. I was a big Apple/Mac diehard.
Has anyone had their phone replaced with ensuing success in using wifi?
One more to the list. Wifi dead on 3G after 4.0.1 upgrade.
Only piece of note to me is that, on the first troubleshooting pass, I reset network settings. The phone restarted, and wifi worked for approx. 3 hours. Subsequent resets of network settings have done nothing. Not even a downgrade to 3.1.3 solved it. That sounds like hardware to me.
My 1-year built in Applecare has just expired. It doesn't seem fair that I should pay for repairs/replacement after what appears to be damage done by system software.
I should also add that my phone was running VERY hot, it was cooking when I put 4.0.1 on. I found an unofficial fix (disable all options in the spotlight search). That will speed up the phone and keep it from over heating. But I fear it is too late. If all that heat burnt something out, then all hope is lost.
Hopefully apple won't punk, although I have a feeling they will.
I took it in to the apple store but it is out of warranty so they couldn't do anything.
upgraded to 4.0 and almost completely lost wifi. it comes on sometimes when i'm in the same room as the base station but doesn't last long. I can stay connected one average a minute before it cuts out.
I've tried it at multiple wifi hotspots. I've up and downgraded software from 4.0.1 to 3.1.2, reset, restarted, restored. it seems like a hardware issue. but it seems to be directly related to when I first upgraded to 4.0.
Maybe a little off topic but some iPhone 4 users are also suffering this same problem. My phone has so weak wifi range that I have to sit next to the Time Capsule to get 1 bar.
Same here. After upgrade I totally lost wifi. It doesn't detect ANY networks. It is completely gone. I have tried every suggestion, gone to the Apple Store, everything. Any other suggestions?
Same here. I tried everything, but there's no chance to get it working.
The problem is that "APPLE BUG" is in the baseband software. Even if you downgrade to 3.1.3 (as I did) it won't work because baseband is not changed and versin 05.13.04 is there. (check Setting->General->About)
Only APPLE can change baseband software during next update or release downgrade procedure for 3G users, but unfortunately Apple don't care about us!
What you can do is disable WiFi - it will save battery and not overheat your phone (which may cause more demage...) I was a raving fan of iPhone, but will they do it to me again in the future...? I'd not go for iPhone4 if this will not be solved quickly (and 1000+ others too). It's hard to believe that Apple crippled our phones and pretends that there is no problem. Shame on you Appple! Is it really so hard allow downgrade our IOS and BB software to IOS3 or your new IOS4 f.... up our devices forever?
Similar problem here - spotty wifi after updating my 3G to 4.0.1, then worse after 4.0.2 for about a week before losing ability to locate any wifi networks at all. No response from restores as new/from backups, reset network settings, airplane on/off, yada yada yada.
Call to Apple was no help.
Went to Genius bar yesterday and had VERY disappointing chat with 2 staffers. Lots of staring at the phone and "could be hardware, but I don't think so... could be software, but we restored and no better so don't think so... hmmm, what do you want to do??" ***? Frustrating when you apparently have more insight into the problem and get literally no help or advice out of a trip to see the experts.
It's weird - I really got the feeling these guys knew something they weren't telling me. I guess we'll try 4.1 and if no relief move on to droid or BB. Bummer.
