No wifi on 3G 4.0.1

I upgraded my 3G from 3.2.1 to 4.0.1 this afternoon and now can not connect to wifi, otherwise it seems ok. Hopefully Apple will fix this problem soon as my trouble does not seem unique: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=969161

Any suggestions out there?

In Settings, General, Rest, choose to reset networks. Then reboot the phone (Home and Sleep until the Apple logo appears). It often works

Add me to the list - foolishly expected this to be fixed in 4.1 but no joy.

Once in a while the phone will momentarily connect to wireless, but more often than not it doesn't see any networks. Sometimes I get the spinning gear and others not. This is definitely Apple's fault - the update must have damaged some component inside the phone which is now out of warranty - 14 months old.

Now I'm in the UAE I have no Apple Store or service centre or anywhere else for that matter to go to get the device checked out/serviced.

I have tried the fridge trick - the first time I tried it the wi-fi worked for the following two weeks but now back to square one.

There's nothing wrong with my network, my Blackberry, iPod touch, iMac, iPad, MBP, Airport Express and Apple TV all work flawlessly with my Airport Extreme as do my PSP, five year old Nokia and an old RAZR! I was in the market for an iPhone 4 - the grey market has thousands of them here at a bit of a premium - but this is putting me right off.

The phone has never been dropped or otherwise abused - it still looks brand new! I feel badly let down by Apple on this - they should acknowledge they are at fault and repair or replace products that are no longer fit for purpose. IMHO a phone should retain its functionality for several years.

I guess the iPhone must be full of cheap components.

Thanks - I saw that but don't have a heat gun and can only imagine the mess I'd make of the phone if I tried.

I've bitten the bullet and bought an iPhone 4 now - the 3G is in for repair. The wi-fi chip had gone bad and is being replaced at a cost of AED450 (about $120). Should sell for about AED1600 ($450 ish) though here in Dubai with the dock and an unused invisible shield.

I wonder if I should try claiming the repair cost back from Apple....LOL 🙂

Tim,
Did your phone display a wifi address in settings/about? I've read and been told at "genius" bar that if you have an address showing the wifi chip should be working. I'm contemplating opening the unit to check antenna connections, etc.
I also had no change in my ability to detect wifi nets after moving on to 4.1, though the phone overall does work faster.

My 3g 8gig iphone is 23 months old and will no longer detect any wifi networks.
It is model Mb489T
I have rebooted and reset network settings but it will still not detect any wifi networks.
I have now updated phone software to 4.0.2 but this has not cured the problem.
I have now updated to 4.1 and wifi has gone gray and says no wifi.
I have restored as new phone, still no wifi.
Has anyone a fix for this please?
This seems to be a common problem

As soon as I did an update to Software Version 4.1 on my I-Touch, I lost the WI-FI link (greyed out) and now I notice that my battery dies much quicker. There are no solutions from Apple to what appears to be happening a lot. I got my Itouch on Fathers Day 2009 and only use it for email, contacts and a planner. If this is any indication how Apple supports its customers, I will not be encouraged to make any other Apple purchases.

I have reset my settings only to lose all my data and still not have WIFI. If I don't see something from Apple soon, goodbye Apple for any future business from me.

Well interesting thing happened that points to this "No WIFI" being a software -vs- a hardware problem. I have had no wifi from August 2010 till now..... Trying to update my iPhone and there are 2 APPS that are over 20 Meg and will not update over the phone network - needs wifi or iTunes. So, I connected the phone to a new computer connected to the internet with a new load of iTunes. Then I went to the phone and tried to update the 2 APPS. Low and behold out of the blue the WIFI Selection screeen loaded with the names of the 2 networks at the office.... Things updated but now I still have no WIFI. If this was a hardware issue, then the selection screen should have not come up...... There is at least a software issue going on.

I have had this problem since upgrading from 3.1.2 to iOS 4.0 and have tried every fix mentioned to n avail (not the soldering gun one as I don't have a gun and don't feel like spending $30 more on a brick). I have reached out to Apple customer support, I have gone to Genius bar, and posted here. All provided no solution, basically a middle finger from apple.
