Admin password not recognized in Recovery mode

Hello,

I am getting a very weird issue. I have a Mac Mini 2018. I wanted to open the Security Utility through recovery mode. My OS is Mojave (10.14.6)

After authentifying myself with my Apple ID, while attempting to open Security Utility, I am asked to enter the macOS password. The Admin account (mine) is preselected. But my password is refused! I verified carefully the keyboard input option: I am sure I am entering well my PWD. My internet connection is working well.

Then I gave up, restarted and could successfully log into my admin session (Indeed!!) and do all stuffs from an admin.

I did it twice, and no way: stuck at Admin password not recognized.

When I got the mini, I have changed successfully the Security settings but as far as I remember I started the Mac by 'Option' key.

Found nothing by checking on the net. I am running out of idea :((

Hello,

Thanks but obviously as I was using my admin password to log successfully in my macOS session, it was working perfectly!! And you are right I was accessing through CMD+R keys at start up.

Nevertheless, I had a new side effect the day after: my recovery partition was gone!!! By using CMD+R, I was directly sent to internet recovery which ended with a great error!! I created an USB install key, and by selecting it after starting with Option key, internet recovery selected and failed again.

Initially, I was willing to make a clean install of Catalina. Thus I wanted to check security option...

Finally, I gave up with my clean install and launch Catalina installer from my active Mojave session by selecting the file in the USB key.

At the end, I have got the interesting below:

  • Recovery partition back again
  • My admin PWD recognized again in Security Utility

Finally remained the Catalina USB installer not working even so I authorized booting from an external disk.

With my fresh recovery partition, after launching the USB installer I got an error message which put me in the right direction even so it was totally useless. I tested my USB key in another Mini without this (...) T2 chip and it was working.

So I came to the conclusion, it was the great security feature introduced by Apple which was messing up! Then I put Security option at Low and the USB key was recognized!!

Guys, you are really neglecting the user guide. I followed carefully the create install instruction from Apple page for Catalina and NOWHERE it was written a clean install will be blocked by T2 chip. It is even more misleading cause in security option, the fact to select start by external disk is not enough!!

Making an USB installation key with the Catalina fresh downloaded in Apple site is not enough. I guess the boot sequence in USB key is not signed during the process which makes the whole crash.

But hats off for the totally not helping error message got after using the USB key while security not off!!

I guess your genius shall be quite busy with T2 chip.

I will never more activate protection. Thanks for adding useless features, adding mess and confusion during the already stressing time where we are trying to recover our Macs!!

And when I read, anyone with good stuff can bypass this T2 chip, I hope you are proud to invest time in complexifying the whole system just for nothing.

Hey there, and thanks for reaching out on Apple Support Communities, ImNOT_Human!

It sounds like you’re trying to log into the Startup Security Utility, but are unable to due to an error that your admin password is incorrect.  I’d be happy to help!

You mentioned that you started the Mac using the ‘Option’ key, but About Startup Security Utility - Apple Support shows that you’d want to use Command + R to start up in macOS Recovery, then go to Utilities > Startup Security Utility from the menu bar.

From there, you’ll click “Enter macOS Password” and choose your admin account.  If the password for your admin account isn’t working, I’d recommend trying a different user or verifying the password again.

If you’re still unable to log in, I’d recommend that you Contact Apple Support.

I hope that helps, and thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  Best regards!
