Is an Older generation Apple TV useless now?

I have a free year of Apple TV available. The Apple TV device I have is 3rd generation or older. How can I tell and how do I know if the subscription is even worth it? I understand no HD or 4K but ate other features also unavailable?

My Apple TV does not show up as a device in iTunes, if that is a factor.

Thanks in Advance!

it will never be in your itunes as a device like iphones or ipads or the likes

only devices which can be synced to will be located there

it will work as airplay speaker in itunes

and it can access the shared itunes lib and it can be controlled with the remote app

and it can access the build in channels and apples itunes store for movies and tv series
