I received an iPhone XS Smart Battery case as a gift for Christmas, and finally got around to using it. I charged it up, saw the orange light and after about 2 hours I tried to use it with my iPhone X but it doesn't work at all. I updated my phone's software to the latest and the charging happened for a split second, I could see that the case was charged up all the way but than it disapearred.

Is the Smart Charging case from Apple? If it is, I'd take the charging case with your iPhone to your Apple Store and show it to them. If it's a 3rd party product, I'd return it for refund or exchange.
Then keep an eye on it for a couple days before taking it to Apple. According to Apple, the battery pack should use it's own charge before using the battery built into the phone. Perhaps when you first connected it, your phone was fully or mostly charged?
It is an Apple case as far as I can tell. It started charging consistently about an hour ago but I"ve yet to take my phone out and try to put it back in again to see if it will charge
