When I try and import 120fps video only the audio plays over a black screen. The video plays fine in Elmedia Player. The files are 1080, MP4, H.264, I'm using a 24fps timeline.
Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Strange file. VLC can't play it, which I've never seen before. The Finder can't convert it. Handbrake can convert, but loses the slomo. The only think I found that works with and converts it is EditReady, makes it into ProRes with slomo that works in the QT player and FCP.
Where was it recorded?
Does the video play in Quicktime Player?
If it does, open the Movie Inspector (command-I) and post a screenshot.
Quicktime 7 Pro opened it and converted it :D (don't "do" catalina yet) but struggles to play it (many skipped frames). Motion handles 120fps media (for export only) but only plays back at 60fps. I can set up a 120fps project.
I get about the same picture as shown.
More info: Smart Converter failed. VLC wouldn't even open it. QtX could open it, but it was just black screen all the way through. I tried Qt7Pro after these three just for grins — imagine my surprise!
The file extension is incorrect. It appears as a text file. What's the extension on your file?
It was shot on the filmic pro app on my Samsung S10. The 24fps video from there works fine. It doesn't play in quicktime bit it does in Elmedia.
Can you open it in MediaInfo and post a screenshot?
Would it be possible to post a short sample video with the same settings somewhere like dropbox or wetransfer, so we can test?

I was trying H.265 and it kept failing. Silly me.
Actually, HandBrake CAN convert it without losing the slomo: one has to go to the Video tab and change the frame rate from the default 30 to the real 120:
