Apple Music will not play after sleep

If I've been playing music and my MacBook goes to sleep and I then wake it up, I cannot resume the music playing. If I try to restart the song it gives the appearance of playing - you get the moving soundbars next to the name - but no audio and the playhead never moves. All of the rest of the app is responsive, I can change albums/playlists, select songs, etc. but the music won't play, even on a new selection. I've tried the Reload Page option on the Controls menu.

The only solution is to close the app and reopen it. Any ideas of how to fix this problem?

SeanLev,

Thank you for taking those steps.

Let's have you boot up into safe mode. It’s a way to start up your Mac so it performs certain checks, repairs, emptying of system cache, and prevents some software from automatically loading: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support. Once in safe mode, check to see if the same behavior continues with the Music app. Sometimes safe mode can successfully resolve some issues. With this being said, after testing in safe mode, restart and log in as normal to see if that helps resolve the issue.

If the issue remains, test a new user account next. This can help isolate if this is a user-specific issue, or a system-wide issue. Here’s how: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support. Based on the results in the new user, you could continue to the section titled 'If the issue doesn't happen in the other account' or 'If the issue happens in the other account' to continue troubleshooting.

Regards.

SeanLev,

Thanks for your responses.

We can understand how this would cause annoyance. There are a few more suggestions we would like you to try to continue isolating/ruling out possible causes to get to a solution. Test for resolution after each step, before moving to the next step.

-Navigate to System Preferences > Energy Saver. If checked, please uncheck the box next to 'Put hard disks to sleep when possible': Use the Energy Saver settings on your Mac - Apple Support. Test for same behavior. If the issue remains, continue below.

-Disconnect your external monitor, and test.

-Close out other running apps, leaving Music open only. Test.

Keep us posted on the results.

Hi SeanLev,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! I understand you are experiencing a playback issue in the Music app on your Mac, after your Mac wakes from sleep. I'd like to help.

I'd like you to check out this support article, which provides help with playback issues within Music on Mac: If you have problems playing music on Mac - Apple Support. I also recommend making sure your macOS is fully updated: How to update the software on your Mac - Apple Support. Let me know if these steps help.

If the behavior remains, please reply back with responses to the below questions:

-Do you have any additional peripherals connected to your Mac? i.e. Bluetooth speaker, external hard drive, etc.

-Does this happen with any other music application (if applicable), or just the Music app?

-Do you have any other apps opened, along with Music, when your Mac falls asleep?

Best regards.

Thanks for the response. I'm using the speakers in the laptop or headphones - no difference, volume is up, progress bar doesn't move.

  • Only other device connected is an external monitor.
  • Can't say if it works with other apps as I only use Apple Music.
  • I typically have lots of apps open - Safaris, Chrome, Outlook, Slack, etc.

This is a relatively new MacBook so not sure if it is the laptop or Catalina that is doing it, but it is annoying.
