iPad timer alarm

when I set the timer on my nice, new, up to date iPad, the alarm only rings for one second then mutes. How do I fix this?

Does this mute occur when you look at the screen of the iPad? If so, then it is recognizing that you are looking at the device and will turn the sound down. It is a feature of Face ID called Attention Aware Features. You can find this in Settings>Face ID & Passcode. You can turn that off there if you wish.
