USB Ethernet adapter won't connect

I recently purchased an Apple USB Ethernet adapter for my MacBook Air. When I attempt to connect it to my modem I get a message in the network connections that apple has assigned an IP address and it cannot access the internet. I am running the latest version of Catalina and from what I've read it may require a driver update. Can someone shed some light as to how I can get this configured?

Try rebooting the laptop.


Try using another USB port and verify the USB port(s) work with other devices (USB stick, keyboard).


Try another Ethernet cable. Also try another Ethernet port on the modem/router.


Try creating a new network location in the Networking System Preferences or create a new user account so that you can set up the networking from scratch.


Try booting into Safe Mode.

Unless you have an odd third party adapter or connecting through a USB hub/dock, then a USB to Ethernet Adapter should just work.


It is possible you got a defective adapter, or your laptop has a bad USB port(s). You can test the Ethernet cable & port on the router using another computer.


If this laptop is new, then take it to an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to be examined. Make sure to take your adapter as well. If the laptop is out of warranty, then take it to an Apple Store where they will examine it for free (according to other contributors on these forums).

Tried all of that before I posted the question. I read there is an issue with Catalina where new drivers are required however I cannot locate anywhere these can be downloaded. I would think since I purchased this directly from Apple and it said when ordering it works with my machine, there would be support readily available to connect.
