My Catalina is slow - telex type speed

My Catalina is slow, even after several days,. It is getting slower too, it seems. I switched from Mojave.

Hopping between programs takes a second or more, the bar with open apps takes a few secs to load, and switching takes another few secs. Opening mail takes time.

Then as I type here even, the display is behind a few words or letters. Remember the telex? I do. This is maddening.

I normally only have a few apps open.

iMac 4K with the standard 8 Gb. Fusion drive, that really should behave better in the new release.

I keep my fingers crossed, I think I solved it.

I had an NTFS partion (formerly used for Bootcamp) and reformatted that to AFPS with disk utility. Can't totally get it away, but that can be done later I think with the repartition tool.

  • Probably Catalina has a problem with such a partition.

Now the machine is fas like it should. Have Safari and Firefox active, Lightroom -making outputs, am browsing photo collections, and everything stays OK.

What I did in the meantime is restart the machione and now the problems less (gone?)..

here is the dump (did some sanitizing)

issues I have had in the past (past 4 migrations) are with old migrated system software, like font-type catalogues that were not correctly synchronized and wanted to load under the new OS or on the new computer.

Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed.

Unsigned files - There are unsigned software files installed. They appear to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

32-bit Apps - This machine has 32-bits apps will not work on macOS 10.15 “Catalina”.

Limited drive access - More information may be available with Full Drive Access.

Thanks about the tip.

Agree about the slower Safari, but should not inhibit other uses.

It is there to detect malicious sites (for instance I have a LUMU lightmeter and those people have a website that is blocked immediately, so harmfull it is, everything goes on red).

I know that the mac has an effective anti-virus shield, but still in the past I had issues after visiting/downloading from 'trusted' hobby sites. [Solved after rebooting several times.]

  • what about those system mods? I remember fonts were loaded and reloaded in the background in Sierra during several months, untill I found out and reinstalled some.

So I will really think about it as last resort.

Well, after hibernating for some time the problems are back: the email and this post is again at telex-type speed, that is, the display shows later what I do than I type, deleting a word then always ends in deleting toomuch (there is a buffer thet is filling that I don't see).

By the way, I have F-secure already for several years also in Mojave. That cannot be the issue.

What I saw in activity monitor is the memory is yellow: I have a photo app (C1) running, but have had that running for ages, Mojave. Day in, day out, no restart. Even had Capture one and Lightroom simultaneous.

I think Apple should have a cleaner. Why install third party apps where some say they ended up in even more detrimental using them?

So today restarted again (often it helps) and it started off great, only after some time to start 'paintballing' again, like loading a excel document while the app was already there, in just under 5 secs and with the telex response again. Come on, for a Fusion drive with just 150 Gb of data.

  • telex speed: even more annoying as the last typed appears where the cursor is positioned in the mean time, and the cursor could have moved elsewhere by me, e.g. to the end of the line.
