Why would Apple ask my children to enter their full Social Security numbers into their phones in order to continue to receive money I send to them via Apple Pay?

I do not feel comfortable entering their full social security numbers into their phones. Is there another way. I have been transferring money via Apple Pay for several months and do not understand why this is happening now? Thank you.

Financial transactions are reportable to the IRS.
Apple Pay Cash processes transactions through a bank. They are required to report to the IRS. In order to do that, they need the SSN.
